The Sustainability of Cashmere: From Herder to Garment

The Sustainability of Cashmere: From Herder to Garment

Posted by Diarmuid Neilan on

Luxury can feel abstract. Soft, light, and warm — but often disconnected from how it is made.

At Ekotree, sustainability is built into every stage of production. From the raw fibre to the finished garment, we aim for transparency, responsibility, and minimal environmental impact — without compromising quality or timeless design.

Pure Fibre, Pure Process

All our cashmere comes from traceable sources. Every yarn we use can be traced back to the herder, ensuring fair treatment and responsible fibre collection.

The fibres are washed with rainwater, creating a purer finish that enhances softness while reducing chemical use. This gentle, natural washing preserves the integrity of the fibre and supports the environment.

We use only natural yarns — no synthetics or blends — because true quality comes from the fibre itself.

Zero Fabric Waste

Our garments are knit seamlessly using 3D knitting technology. Every piece is formed as a single, continuous garment, eliminating fabric offcuts entirely. This precision method allows us to create pieces that fit beautifully without wasting materials.

Fair Business Practices

Sustainability is more than environmental responsibility — it is ethical responsibility.

  • We work closely with herders to ensure fair compensation for their fibre.

  • Our studio employs skilled knitters, millers, and finishers under fair working conditions.

  • Every step of the process — from fibre selection to final finishing — is conducted with transparency and care.

This approach ensures that quality and ethics are inseparable.

Transparency You Can See

Because we operate our own studio in Doolin, County Clare, we can offer something rare: the chance to meet the people who make your garment.

Visitors to our open studio workshop can see the cashmere come to life — from yarn to finished piece. Witnessing the care, skill, and attention involved makes the value of each garment tangible in a way no label can.

Long-Term Thinking

By combining traceable fibres, natural processes, and zero-waste production, we create garments built to last. A cashmere wrap, poncho, or sweater is not a seasonal purchase; it is an investment in something enduring.

Every piece that leaves our studio represents:

  • Responsible sourcing

  • Thoughtful craftsmanship

  • Timeless design

  • A commitment to people and the planet

Why It Matters

Sustainability is more than a buzzword. For us, it is a guiding principle:

  • Minimise impact without compromising quality

  • Respect the fibre, the makers, and the planet

  • Offer customers a clear, honest connection to the source of their garments

When you purchase directly from Ekotree, you are not only acquiring a soft, luxurious cashmere garment. You are participating in a system that values traceability, fairness, and longevity at every stage.
